Lease Up Process: Finding a place to rent

Once you get your voucher, you are responsible for finding a place to rent that will take a voucher. This may be hard so be prepared!

The best option if you are currently living in a unit is to see if your current landlord will take a voucher. Here is a fact sheet you can give your landlord to see all of the benefits of working with the Lincoln Housing Authority (LHA). Your unit still has to go through all of the same processes as a new unit but you wouldn’t have to move.

Properties that have tax-credit financing are required to take vouchers. Here is a list of properties you can contact to see if they have any openings.

Another good place to look for properties is the Housing Nebraska site housing.ne.gov or you can call 877-425-8844 for more information.

If you still can’t find a place to rent, contact your housing specialist. You will have 90 days to look for a place to rent after you get your voucher. In certain situations you may qualify for additional time to search but you have to track that you have been looking using landlord contact sheets.

Once you find a place that accepts your voucher and that is close to your target rent, you will give the landlord the inspection form you received at the Voucher Briefing to start the inspection process.
