Transferring

If you wish to move with your voucher to a different unit within the City of Lincoln, generally moves are permitted as long as you:

• notify the Lincoln Housing Authority (LHA) ahead of time and your landlord in writing

• terminate your existing lease using the terms you agreed to when you signed the lease

• find other housing in Lincoln that meets the standards of the program

TRANSFERRING is if you want to continue living within Lincoln. PORTABILITY OR PORTING is if you want to leave Lincoln.

Please Keep these important things in mind:
  • THE PROCESS CAN TAKE 45-60 DAYS
  • YOU MAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING YOUR FIRST MONTH’S RENT and thereafter if your move-out date is less than 45 days and you move to the new unit, if the unit is not approved, or if you become ineligible to receive a voucher
  • LHA WILL NOT PAY ANY RENT SUBSIDY UNTIL THE HAP CONTRACT AND LEASE IS APPROVED by the landlord and LHA.
  • IF YOU OWE YOUR CURRENT LANDLORD MONEY OR HAVE NOT FIXED ANY TENANT-DEFECTS FOUND DURING YOUR LHA INSPECTION you won’t be able to relocate from your current unit.
  • YOU CAN’T TRANSFER TO A UNIT WHERE YOUR PORTION OF RENT EXCEEDS 50% OF YOUR HOUSEHOLD’S INCOME.
  • YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TRANSFER IF YOU ARE NOT CURRENT ON ANY REPAYMENTS TO LHA.

The process can be complicated so BEFORE you move out or commit to a new unit, contact your Housing Specialist to verify the procedures and if you are eligible.
